Starbucks Iced White Chocolate Mocha Easy Copycat Recipe

By Stephanie Manley Updated 05/28/26

Starbucks’ Iced White Chocolate Mocha is one of the chain’s signature cold coffee drinks, recognizable for its creamy sweetness and the distinct flavor of white chocolate layered over espresso. This homemade version uses a two-ingredient white chocolate sauce made from real chocolate, which delivers more depth than the commercial syrups most coffee shops use. Making it at home significantly reduces costs and lets you adjust the sweetness, milk type, and coffee strength to your taste. It takes about 10 minutes to assemble once your espresso is brewed and cooled.

The Starbucks Iced White Chocolate Mocha is a two-part recipe: a homemade white chocolate sauce and a quick drink assembly. The sauce requires only whole milk and high-quality white chocolate, and once you have a batch in the refrigerator, each drink takes about two minutes to make.

The drink itself follows a simple structure. White chocolate sauce goes in first, then espresso, then cold milk over ice, topped with whipped cream and a drizzle of the same sauce. Understanding that order (and the ratios) is what makes the difference between a drink that tastes like the original and one that just tastes like sweet iced coffee.

Why this copycat version is different

Most copycat versions of this drink call for three or four sauce ingredients. This one uses just two: whole milk and a real white chocolate bar. Shaving the chocolate with a vegetable peeler instead of chopping it creates thinner pieces that melt faster and more evenly, and using real chocolate means you get the richness of actual cocoa butter instead of the artificial vanilla flavoring that makes commercial syrups taste flat. For readers who want the exact Starbucks version without making the sauce from scratch, this post also names the Fontana White Chocolate Mocha Sauce by name as a direct swap.

Why this homemade iced white chocolate mocha works so well

  • Using authentic white chocolate sauce instead of artificial syrups creates a richer, more balanced flavor
  • Combining the white chocolate with shots of espresso results in a perfectly balanced coffee drink
  • The recipe is versatile and can be made with various coffee preparation methods, eliminating the need for specialized equipment
  • Homemade white chocolate sauce elevates the drink’s quality and allows for customization

No Espresso Machine? No Problem!

You don’t need expensive equipment to make this drink at home. Here are three easy alternatives:

Option 1: Extra Strong Coffee

  • Brew coffee with double the grounds using any standard method
  • Use dark roast for a richer flavor
  • Allow to cool completely before using

Option 2: Moka Pot Espresso

  • Fill the reservoir with water
  • Add espresso-ground coffee to the filter basket
  • Heat over low until coffee fills the upper chamber
  • Allow to cool before using

Option 3: Instant Espresso Powder

  • Use quality instant espresso like Medaglia D’Oro
  • Dissolve in a small amount of hot water
  • Cool before adding to your drink

Iced white chocolate mocha ingredients

To make a cold white chocolate mocha drink, you will need:

  • Espresso – Provides a rich coffee base and caffeine boost
  • White chocolate – Creates the signature sweet, creamy flavor
  • Milk – Adds smoothness and dilutes the strong coffee flavor
  • Ice cubes – Chill the drink without watering it down
  • Whipped cream – Adds a luxurious finishing touch

Ingredient notes and substitutions

Several brands of white chocolate sauce are available, but look for one made specifically for iced coffee drinks. If you want what you get in the coffee shop, order a Starbucks Fontana Frappuccino with White Chocolate Mocha Sauce.

Starbucks uses 2% milk to make this iced mocha latte. You can use whole or skim milk, or plant-based dairy-free milk such as almond or oat milk.

You don’t need an espresso machine to make this recipe (see above for alternatives). Whichever type of coffee you use, let it cool, or better yet, chill, before preparing the drink. Cold brew coffee is a great option. Doing this will prevent the Iced White Chocolate coffee from becoming diluted.

How to make homemade white chocolate sauce

If you order a white mocha drink in a shop, the barista will likely use white chocolate syrup. Don’t be fooled; pros use syrups for convenience, not taste.

White chocolate syrups are made from simple syrup (water and a sweetener) and often artificial vanilla flavoring. This makes them cheap to produce and long-lasting. This makes sense for a business but not for a coffee drinker. You can do better by using homemade white chocolate sauce.

White Chocolate Sauce Ingredients

You only need two simple ingredients to make a delicious white chocolate sauce:

  • Whole milk – Provides the liquid base that melts the chocolate into a smooth, pourable sauce; whole milk gives the richest result.
  • White chocolate – Creates the signature creamy, sweet flavor; use a high-quality chocolate bar for the best depth of flavor.

To make the white chocolate sauce:

  1. Heat a cup of whole milk over medium heat in a small, heavy-bottomed saucepan. Stir the milk continuously using a whisk to heat evenly.
  2. When the first wisps of steam rise from the milk, remove the pan from the burner and place it on a heat-safe surface.
  3. Use a peeler to shred 4 ounces of high-quality white chocolate from a candy bar into the milk.
  4. Use the whisk to combine until smooth. If the chocolate doesn’t melt completely, return the pan to the heat, but be careful not to burn the mixture.
  5. Cool slightly before using the sauce or store in an air-tight container.

How to Make Starbucks Iced White Chocolate Mocha

Here are the easy steps to make a cold white chocolate mocha:

  1. Make espresso using your favorite method (machine, Nespresso, moka pot, or instant). Allow the brewed espresso to cool to room temperature.
  2. Drizzle white chocolate sauce around the inside of a glass.
  3. Fill the glass with ice and add the espresso.
  4. Pour in the milk. Use a long handle spoon to stir until combined.

Recipe variations

This Starbucks Iced White Chocolate Mocha recipe tastes excellent, but feel free to play around and make it your own. Here are a few simple ways to change things up:

  • Peppermint Twist. Peppermint goes exceptionally well with white chocolate. Add a drop of peppermint oil to the milk. Use a hammer to crush peppermint candies into a powder, then sprinkle liberally over the whipped cream. If you want to get fancy, serve with peppermint bark.
  • Spike with a bit of alcohol. An ounce of Godiva White Chocolate Liqueur will bring this drink to the next level, but any cream liqueur works well. RumChata or your favorite flavor of Whisper Creek Tennessee Sipping Cream is a delicious choice.
  • Iced Gingersnap Vanilla Mocha. Gingerbread is so delicious that it is a shame it is relegated to the holiday season. But you can enjoy the flavor of gingerbread all year round by making an Iced Gingersnap Vanilla Mocha. Add two tablespoons of Torani Gingerbread Syrup to the milk and sprinkle crushed gingersnap cookies on top of the whipped cream.

Notes

  • Let the espresso cool completely before using it. Adding hot espresso directly to a glass of ice melts a significant amount of it immediately, diluting the drink and throwing off the balance. If you are short on time, spread the espresso in a shallow dish or pour it over a few ice cubes in a separate glass to speed up the cooling.
  • The sauce thickens as it cools in the refrigerator, which is normal. Stir it briefly before using. If it has become too thick to drizzle, microwave it in 10-second intervals, stirring between each, until it reaches a pourable consistency.
  • For a cleaner presentation, drizzle the sauce in a slow circular motion, starting from the bottom of the glass and spiraling up. This creates the familiar look of the Starbucks original and distributes flavor more evenly than a single pour.
