Black Angus Cheesy Garlic Bread Copycat Recipe
Black Angus Steakhouse’s cheesy garlic bread is one of those starters that regularly outshines the entrees it accompanies. This copycat recipe features French bread topped with a rich, spreadable blend of Asiago and Monterey Jack cheeses, butter, garlic, and fresh green onions, broiled to a bubbly golden finish. The same two-cheese blend and a bake-then-broil technique give you authentic steakhouse results without leaving home. It comes together in about 20 minutes, making it a reliable starter or side dish for any night of the week.

Black Angus Steakhouse built a loyal following for its cheesy garlic bread, a starter that arrived warm, golden, and generously covered in a creamy cheese spread. The combination of two cheeses, garlic, and green onions sets it apart from the standard butter-and-garlic versions common at most restaurants.
This copycat version stays true to that formula. Rather than simply brushing bread with garlic butter, the recipe builds a thick, spreadable blend that fuses the cheese into every bite. The result is a richer, more satisfying garlic bread that works equally well as a starter, a side dish alongside steak or pasta, or a contribution to a bread basket for entertaining.
Why this recipe works
The spreadable cheese mixture is what separates this recipe from standard garlic bread. Using both Asiago and Monterey Jack gives you the sharp, nutty depth of the Asiago alongside the smooth meltability of the Monterey Jack. Neither cheese alone achieves the right balance.
Ingredients
- Garlic – Provides the essential aromatic flavor that defines great garlic bread
- French bread – Provides a sturdy, crusty base that stands up to the rich topping
- Butter – Creates richness and helps the bread develop a golden crust
- Asiago cheese – Adds a sharp, nutty flavor that distinguishes this from ordinary garlic bread
- Monterey Jack cheese – Contributes creamy meltability and mild flavor
- Mayonnaise – Secret ingredient that creates the perfect creamy, spreadable consistency
- Green onions – Adds fresh flavor and color contrast

Step-by-Step Instructions
Preparing the Bread:
- Preheat your oven to 350°F.
- Place a rack in the middle position and another in the top position for broiling later.
- Using a bread knife, cut the French bread loaf horizontally into two equal halves, creating a top and bottom piece.
- Place both halves cut-side up on a baking sheet.
Creating the Cheese Spread:
- In a medium mixing bowl, combine 1/2 cup softened butter and 2 teaspoons minced garlic, mixing until well incorporated.
- Add 1 cup shredded Asiago cheese and 1 cup shredded Monterey Jack cheese to the butter mixture.
- Add 1 cup of mayonnaise to the bowl, which will bind the ingredients together and create a spreadable consistency.
- Fold in 1 cup chopped green onions, distributing them evenly throughout the mixture.
- Stir all ingredients until completely blended, creating a thick, uniform spread.
Baking the Garlic Bread:
- Using a spatula or butter knife, generously spread the cheese mixture onto the cut sides of both bread halves, distributing it evenly to the edges.
- Place the prepared bread on the middle rack of the preheated oven and bake for 7 minutes, until the bread is heated and the cheese begins to melt.
- Switch the oven to broiler setting on high.
- Move the baking sheet to the top rack and broil for about 3 minutes, keeping an eye on it to prevent burning. The topping should become bubbly and develop a golden brown color with some darker spots.
- Remove from the oven and cool for 1-2 minutes before cutting.
- Using a serrated knife, cut each half into 2-inch slices and serve immediately while hot and melty.

Storage and Reheating Instructions
- Best served: This bread is best when served immediately after baking.
- Refrigerator: Store leftover bread in an airtight container for 2 days.
- Freezer: The unbaked bread with topping can be frozen for up to 1 month. Wrap tightly in plastic wrap, then aluminum foil.
- Reheating: For refrigerated leftovers, reheat in a 350°F oven for 5 minutes or until cheese is melty. For frozen unbaked bread, bake from frozen at 350°F for 15 minutes, then broil as directed.

Having worked for them there was never any Asiago cheese in the recipe
This bread is my favorite recipe! Sometimes I add a little sprinkle of Ranch Dressing Mix. Everyone who has ever tried it says that they could make a meal off of this bread alone!
I wasn’t sure about the mayonnaise on this bread but it came out wonderful!
